When the Polish team stepped foot in the Lansdowne Club last November, no one knew what a spell-binding evening of great fencing we were to witness. While Channel 4 filmed the evening, we watched as Richard Kruse and Laurence Halsted showed us why they are now considered real contenders for medals at the 2012 Olympics.

The Olympic Pathway at the Lansdowne Club

The European Championships, Plovdiv

Congratulations to Richard Kruse who won the silver medal and to Laurence Halsted the bronze medal at the European Championships. These were two superb results. Also many congratulations to Ziemek Wojciechowski their coach. These results were historic in that we have never had two European medallists in the same weapon at senior level. We have now won a silver medal in men's foil at the European Championships in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Richard Kruse

Congratulations to Richard for his continued international success. He made the podium in the first three senior competitions, winning the World Cup in Copenhagen, second in the Grand Prix in Paris, and winning the Grand Prix in Venice. This is the first time in British foil fencing history that one fencer has won a Grand Prix and a World Cup in the same season. Richard is now ranked in the top ten in the world.

Edward Jefferies

Well done to another Lansdowne Club member, Edward Jefferies, who won the Under 20s World Cup in Laeszno, Poland last December and has gone on to win silver at the World Junior Championships in Belfast this March. Yet again, these are ground-breaking results, as the last time we won medals at this level was in 1976.

The Latest Club News

Stephen goes fencing in Avignon

Stephen Colover went on holiday to France and, as one does, he took his fencing kit with him just on the off-chance of bumping into a fencer  So, passing through Avignon he found a charming fencing club ( escrimeavignon.asso-web.com ) and had an enjoyable few evenings fencing.  Stephen is thinking of arranging a trip to the club later this year.  As he says "Avignon is a lovely city and I can't think of a better excuse to go back in the Autumn."

18 July Richard Wins Bronze

Richard won bronze at the European Championships in Leipzig, today. This took his medal tally at this event to three in the last four years.

Having won all but one of his fights in the first round Richard went into the elimination stages of the event ranked 6th giving him a bye in to the round of 32. His first opponent was Hungarian, Gabor Szabados, who he beat 15-11 in a closely contested fight and he then faced Romanian, Vergil Saliscan. In hugely tense fight at one point Kruse found himself trailing 7-11 but with pure grit and determination clawed his way back winning 15-11. Going into the final round of eight Richard then drew the exceptionally talent Frenchman, Erwan Le Pechoux. Ranked 22 in the world Le Pechoux dominated the early stages of the fight and having scored the first hit Richard was unable to take the lead again in normal time. In the third and final period he had a mountain to climb at 11-8 down. A stunning comeback saw the scores level at 13-13 at the end of normal time taking the fight into 1 minute sudden death play-off. Holding his nerve Richard then took the final hit which guaranteed him a medal.

His semi-final was against world number 12, Valerio Aspromonte, a former World Junior Champion. Richard took the initiative early on in the fight, leading 4-3 at the first break, but Aspromonte fought back in the second period to take the score to 12-10 going into the final period. Richard came out looking confident having taken some instruction Ziemek and looked much more relaxed than his opponent. He took control of the distance and led 14-13 but the Italian clawed a hit back to make it 14 all. In a dramatic final exchange Kruse launched an attack but missed and his opponent scored the winning hit on the counter-attack.
